Got my updated Thyroid tests back today and my bloodwork is NORMAL. I'm euthyroid. Very strange. The doctor said I may get hypothyroid, but it is unlikely.
GREAT news!

On Monday, Jan. 5th, I went to the hospital to have the Radioactive uptake scan. In the morning, they gave me 2 radioactive pills, and said to come back at 2pm. I did, and it was 2 hours of long, boring scans. One measured the amount of radioactive iodine uptake in my thyroid and compared it to what was in the rest of my body.
On Tuesday, Jan. 6th, we went in for a second scan which went really quick. The Radiologist came in to tell us that apparently I did NOT have Graves disease, because the uptake was low! He wanted me to have a Ultrasound, which we did quickly. This did not show any nodules and other than being enlarged, was pretty good. Okay, now what?
My doctor called this evening and said I do not have Graves Disease, what I have is Subacute Thyroiditis. (http://health.allrefer.com/health/subacute-thyroiditis-info.html) This was brought on by a virus attacking my Thyroid. I will have to get a bloodtest in a week or so, but should be getting better as time goes on. I will not have to be on thyroid hormone for the rest of my life OR take any more antithyroid meds if my bloodwork remains good. GREAT NEWS.
After being on the low-iodine diet for 10 days, I celebrated by having Hotdogs and Macaroni and cheese...and for dessert - Ice cream
My name is Kevin. I'm currently 15. I have Type 1 Diabetes, and now Graves disease with Hyperthyroidism. This is a brief history of all I've gone thru to date.
I was diagnosed with Diabetes when I was 10. You can see the whole story at this site.
Insulin Pumpers I was on shots for awhile, but now I'm using a Deltec Insulin Pump and doing well. I play soccer for my school's JV team and I'm in 9th grade. Recently, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and it messed up everything with my diabetes too.
About the graves...I found out on a routine exam to the Endocrinologist when I complained about not growing much. After a bloodtest, I was put on Tapazole. Doc said to check in 4 weeks. But within 2 weeks we knew things were getting much worse, and the bloodwork confirmed it...I was even more Hyperthyroid. Doc increased the medication again, and in 2 weeks, I was still even more hyperthyroid. We doubled the dose again, and the same thing happened. Doc changed the meds to PTU and within two weeks we found out that the T4 was a tiny bit better, but the TSH was still not. That brings us to current time...(January) I was taken off the meds Christmas day and scheduled for Radioactive Iodine. Dec. 30th started the non-iodine diet...no chocolate, pizza, white bread, eggs, shellfish, chili, molasses, salt, jello, agar, cured foods (bacon), Asian food, or food with red coloring! What's a kid to eat?
Some of my favorite things to do are to play video games, chat online, play soccer and spend time watching shows or playing games with my family.
